September 26, 1928

Went downtown this noon.  (Louise asked me to get her shoes but I forgot them).

Washed the clothes this evening, all by lonesome, ie, after Mother helped me sort. (Someone was parked in from of the house for a while, I think).

Rhea Louise & I went to the Strand, matinee, to see Clara Bow in " The Fleets In".  It was very good

September 23, 1928

Went to S.S. this morning. Cleaned out our desk later.  Howard called me up this afternoon and I cancelled out date for tonight and all other dates following.

I stayed home tonight for a while, read "Round the Corner in Gay Street" (1908, Grace S. Richmond and available via Amazon and Barnes and Noble).  Rhea and I went for a little ride.

What the heck Happened with Howard.  There is no indication that they'd had a tiff!

Note: Couldn't find anything about Maas company in Akron, but ready-to-wear clothing was still a bit unusual for the time since most women sewed their own.

September 18, 1928

Worked fast & furious today & overtime till about 6:00 doing some work for a Mr. Johnston of the A.R.G.A of A - Howard waited for me. September 17, 1928

Got to work on time this morning.  Rather cool.

Worked a little over-time tonight.  Lenore has the rest of her vacation this week, so we're busy at switchboard.  Howard brot [sic] me home this evening, as usual.  Mother, Father, Dorothy, Rhea and I canned peaches & pears tonight. Mother & I fixed the crabapples and elderberries for jelly & washed dishes, etc...

Note: MAKE SURE that you are picking elderberries and not poke weed!
Poke weed cause tummy ache, the root is poisonous!

Got to bed about 12:30.  Tired?  Not at all!!

Couldn't find a vintage recipe for elderberry jelly so I will refer to Sure Jell

what you need
3cups  prepared juice (buy about 6 qt. or 3 lb. fully ripe elderberries)
1/4cup  fresh lemon juice
1box  SURE-JELL Fruit Pectin
1/2tsp.  butter or margarine
4-1/2cups  sugar, measured into separate bowl
make it

BRING boiling-water canner, half full with water, to simmer. Wash jars and screw bands in hot soapy water; rinse with warm water. Pour boiling water over flat lids in saucepan off the heat. Let stand in hot water until ready to use. Drain well before filling.

REMOVE and discard large stems from elderberries. Crush fruit thoroughly; place in saucepan. Cook on medium heat until juice starts to flow, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 15 min., stirring occasionally. Place 3 layers of damp cheesecloth or jelly bag in large bowl. Pour prepared fruit into cheesecloth. Tie cheesecloth closed; hang and let drip into bowl until dripping stops. Press gently. Measure exactly 3 cups prepared juice into 6- or 8-qt. saucepot. (If necessary, add up to 1/2 cup water for exact measure.) Stir in lemon juice.

STIR pectin into juice in saucepot. Add butter to reduce foaming. Bring mixture to full rolling boil (a boil that doesn't stop bubbling when stirred) on high heat, stirring constantly. Stir in sugar. Return to full rolling boil and boil exactly 1 min., stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim off any foam with metal spoon.

LADLE immediately into prepared jars, filling to within 1/8 inch of tops. Wipe jar rims and threads. Cover with two-piece lids. Screw bands tightly. Place jars on elevated rack in canner. Lower rack into canner. (Water must cover jars by 1 to 2 inches. Add boiling water, if necessary.) Cover; bring water to gentle boil. Process 5 min. Remove jars and place upright on towel to cool completely. After jars cool, check seals by pressing middles of lids with finger. (If lids spring back, lids are not sealed and refrigeration is necessary.)

HOW TO MEASURE PRECISELY
To get exact level cup measures of sugar, spoon sugar into dry metal or plastic measuring cup, then level by scraping excess sugar from top of cup with a straight-edged knife.

ALTITUDE CHART
At altitudes above 1,000 feet, increase processing time as indicated: 1,001 to 3,000 feet-increase processing time by 5 min.; 3,001 to 6,000 feet-increase processing time by 10 min.; 6,001 to 8,000 feet-increase processing time by 15 min.; 8,001 to 10,000 feet-increase processing time by 20 min.

JAM OR JELLY DIDN'T SET?
Every once in a while, you may find that your jam does not set the way you expected. If your efforts resulted in a runny batch, try our Remake Directions to improve your finished jam. If your jam still doesn't set, you can always use it as a glaze or syrup

September 16, 1928

Washed dishes, cleaned bathroom fixtures, cleaned out the dresser in the bathroom - made the beds, etc.  Mother & I got the dinner.  Father & Mr. D. got a 'carload' of fruit etc. I went after Mrs. D. & we had dinner here.

Louise & I went to the show tonight - Keith's - "The Cops" - not so awful bad.  Got home about 12:00.

About Keith's: Built in 1922 for $2 million, this palatial vaudeville theater opened on November 6, 1923 with a seating capacity of 2,530. It later made the switch to movies.

In the 1950’s, the Palace Theater became the home for Cinerama—a renovation that required the removal of 1,800 seats. Despite the initial success, the Palace Theater, and its neighbors, fell on hard times and the theater closed in 1969. The marquee was subsequently torn down and the theater was boarded up.
In 1970, the Playhouse Square Association was formed to save the Palace Theater and other nearby theaters, such as the Ohio and the Allen. The Palace Theater reopened in 1973 as a performing arts venue and is still part of the Playhouse Square group.
It remains a live theater and performing arts venue to this day.

Pickle & Relish Tips (from Better Homes & Gardens, 1928)

  • "Pickling" cucumbers will make crunchier pickles than "table" or "slicing" varieties. Select top-quality, cucumbers; use them within 24 hours of harvest and keep cool for up to one week. To prepare cucumbers for pickling, cut off blossom ends. Wash well, especially around stems. Save odd-shaped or more mature cucumbers for relish and bread-and-butter style pickles.
  • Use granulated pickling or canning salt; table salt may darken pickles.
  • Cider vinegar is most often used, but white vinegar can be used. Choose high-grade vinegar of 5 percent acid. Never dilute vinegar more than is indicated in recipe. For a less-sour product, add more sugar.
  • Sugar helps keep pickles firm. Use granulated white sugar unless the recipe specifies brown sugar.
  • Use fresh spices for best flavor. Substituting ground spices for a whole spice may cause cloudiness.
  • Hard water may prevent brined pickles from curing properly; use soft water for best quality.
  • Use stoneware, glass, enamel containers and utensils. Do not use brass, copper, zinc, galvanized, or iron utensils.

Easy Pickles (from the Civic League Cookbook 1914)

Ingredients

  • pickles of uniform size (about three inches long)
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 ounce of mixed white and black mustard seed
  • 1 ounce of whole cloves and cinnamon bark mixed or any spices preferred
  • alum the size of a walnut
  • 1 gallon of vinegar

Instructions

Take pickles of uniform size (about three inches long) wash and pack in fruit jars as tightly as you can. Add the salt, sugar, mixed white and black mustard seed, whole cloves and cinnamon bark mixed or any spices preferred and alum to the vinegar. Bring to a good boil, then pour over the pickles in the jars and seal. A piece of horse radish root is nice placed in each jar.
